Why do I report both time and distance?

Last Updated: Feb 21, 2014 04:40PM EST
Information about how much time you spent watching, photographing or collecting butterflies and how far you traveled will help us determine the relative abundance of the butterflies you reported. For example, finding 50 Bordered Patches in 15 minutes while standing in one place indicates a  different density than if you recorded 50 Bordered Patches in 1 hour while driving 10 miles. Without the time and distance information, we won’t be able to make a reliable estimate of abundance for management, conservation and scientific explorations.
